Shuojie Tongwen: Chinese Converter

Shuojie Tongwen: Chinese Converter

Converts web pages between Traditional and Simplified Chinese, defaulting to Taiwan Traditional with Taiwan vocabulary. Dictionaries update from OpenCC automatically and everything runs inside your browser.

Chrome extension Version 0.4.0 Updated 2026-10-29 Free

Features

Taiwan vocabulary

Converts to Taiwan Traditional Chinese with Taiwan wording by default: ่ฝฏไปถ โ†’ ่ปŸ้ซ”, ๆ‰“ๅฐๆœบ โ†’ ๅฐ่กจๆฉŸ, ้€š่ƒ€ โ†’ ้€š่†จ.

Auto-updated OpenCC dictionaries

Checks OpenCC for dictionary updates every week. You can also update by hand or roll back to the previous version.

Reaches every part of the page

Works in cross-origin iframes, Shadow DOM (closed roots included) and content loaded after the page opens.

Words split by HTML tags

A word split by markup, such as ๆ‰“<a>ๅฐๆœบ</a>, is converted as a whole to ๅฐ่กจๆฉŸ instead of character by character.

Automatic mode

Uses the language a page declares, and analyses the text when the declaration is missing or wrong, so only the script you do not read gets converted.

Original alongside

Hover a paragraph to see the original, or show the original under every paragraph that changed.

Custom words and extra word lists

Custom words can apply everywhere or to one site and take priority over the dictionary. Extra lists add Wikipedia conversion groups, Wikidata person and place names, Firefox computing terms and NAER academic terms, each switched on by category.

Site rules and excluded regions

Make a site always convert to Traditional, to Simplified, or not at all, or never convert one specific page. Exclude parts of a page with a CSS selector, XPath, or by clicking them.

Floating button

Click to cycle through Traditional, Simplified and the original; long-press or right-click for a menu. Drag it anywhere, change its label and colour, or hide it on chosen sites.

Converter page

Paste text to convert it with the changes highlighted, or convert many text, subtitle and HTML files at once with automatic encoding detection, then download them singly or as a ZIP. Files never leave your browser.

Clipboard and text fields

Convert what you have copied and paste it straight away, or convert the text in the field you are typing in.

Characters only

Converts character by character without swapping vocabulary, everywhere or on chosen sites.

FAQ

How is Shuojie Tongwen different from other Chinese converters?

It uses OpenCC dictionaries that update every week, plus extra cross-strait vocabulary OpenCC lacks. It also converts text inside iframes and Shadow DOM and handles words split by HTML tags, so words are not left half converted.

Does it send the pages I visit anywhere?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser and the extension collects and sends no personal data or page content. Its only network access is downloading dictionary updates from the OpenCC GitHub repository.

Why does it need access to all websites?

To convert text on a page the extension has to read and rewrite that page. All of this happens on your device and nothing is uploaded.

How do I stop it converting a particular site?

Choose โ€œnever convert this siteโ€ or โ€œnever convert this pageโ€ from the toolbar popup or the right-click menu, or exclude only a specific part of the page.

Can it convert files?

Yes. Open the converter page, add text, subtitle or HTML files, and download the results one by one or as a ZIP. Files are never uploaded.
